STEM
At HAFTR Middle School we take great pride in our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program. We pride ourselves on not only focusing on hardware-centered programming, but rather, an in-depth, project-based curriculum.
In addition to their project-based standard Science curriculum, students work once a week on hands-on lab projects. These advanced STEM labs will teach coding, robotics, 3D modeling, engineering and entrepreneurship, and be directly correlated to the Science curriculum and state standards.
This advanced learning will help utilize the model of “failing forward.” Through this educational methodology, students learn that making mistakes is a means to an end. These real world applications will help them better prepare for a seamless transition into high school, as well as help them begin to understand what the world is beyond the walls of HAFTR.
Headed by our Science and STEM Chair, Gittel Grant, our STEM curriculum positions students to be the leaders of the learning process, and prepares them with the skills they will need to be competitive in an ever changing professional landscape.
Bar/Bat Mitzvah Workshops
HAFTR Middle School has incorporated a unique class into its curriculum: the Bar & Bat Mitzvah Workshop.
These weekly classes teach students what it means to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah. They learn proper middot, halachic responsibility, and behavior at Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations.
As part of the course, HAFTR hosts a mock Bar and Bat Mitzvah at Beth Shalom, where students walk through a celebration step by step—from greeting the guest of honor and parents with Mazel Tov, to learning respectful conduct throughout the event.
The course encourages students to enjoy themselves while acting like a mensch and taking on an additional chessed opportunity.
Additionally, the Middle School hosts evening events for Mothers/Daughters and Fathers/Sons.
The girls’ program includes workshops on the meaning of Bat Mitzvah, challah baking, chavruta learning on exceptional Jewish women, and dance pointers for simcha dancing.
The boys’ program focuses on the mitzvah of Tefillin, how Tefillin are constructed, and simcha dancing.
Both evenings are sponsored by the PTA, featuring a dinner and a special gift for each Bar/Bat Mitzvah student.
Mishmar
Mishmar is an optional Torah learning program open to boys and girls in grades 6 – 8.
Students spend part of the time learning Torah and part of the time involved in recreational activity in the gym. It is a great opportunity for students to learn in an informal atmosphere and to interact with members of the faculty in a less formal manner. Snacks are provided each week.

The program meets on Thursdays after school from 4:30 – 5:30 pm.
It begins in October and ends in the spring, typically culminating in a trip to a major league baseball game. Carpool pickup is required.
