Names Not Numbers©
Conceived by Tova-Fish-Rosenberg, Names, Not Numbers is a project that matches 8th grade students with Holocaust survivors in order to conduct interviews and create a documentary film around their process. Spanning a full-year, and in conjunction with Lawrence Middle School, HAFTR students apply for entry and, if accepted, are assigned a survivor. Students research the survivor using books, the internet and a trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. They compose their own questions for the survivor. The students learn video interview techniques from a professional filmmaker, including practiced use of the hi-tech equipment. Using documentary film tools, they conduct an interview with their survivor, edit their own work with assistance from a professional, and complete their own documentary film project.
The student project culminates in a celebration with a gala movie premiere with the community and participants invited. Additionally, the final documentary product is archived at the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Center, and Yeshiva University.
